Parkinson's disease is one of the many conditions that Interim HealthCare offers home care services for. Our staff provides both skilled nursing care, when needed, and non-medical home care. Non-medical care can include assistance with activities of daily living such as dressing, cooking, light housekeeping and transportation.
Parkinson's is a disorder of the brain, it affects men and women, typically age 50 and older. It impacts muscle movement, making walking difficult and causing tremors. Younger adults can sometimes develop Parkinson's disease. About 1 million people in the U.S. are affected by the disease.
Early signs are often mild and can be difficult to evaluate, particularly in order adults.
Signs and symptoms of Parkinson's include:
- Blinking
- Difficulty swallowing
- Drooling
- Problems with balance and walking
- No facial expression
- Muscle aches and pains
- Movement problems, including loss of fine hand movements or slowed movements
- Rigid or stiff muscles, particularly in the legs
- Shaking or tremors, usually when you are at rest
- Slow speech or a monotone voice
- Stooping
There is no cure at this time for Parkinson's disease, but there are medications that can help control symptoms. Research into understanding of the disease and new treatments is ongoing. The latest involves a new technology developed in Germany that will allow doctors to see the development of the brain cells that are responsible for Parkinson's disease. The hope is that by seeing how the cells behave in the begninning, researchers can better understand the disease.
Until there's a cure individuals may find that help from an in-home care agency such as Interim HealthCare to be beneficial. In home care can help to keep them in their homes, safely while maintaining their independence.
